Today we remember Prince Jonah Kūhiō, an exempla

Today we remember Prince Jonah Kūhiō, an exemplary monarch, leader and advocate. ⁠
⁠
He served as a non-voting congressional delegate for #Hawaii for almost 20 years in Washington D.C. He introduced the Hawaii Statehood Act and advocated for women’s suffrage. He also championed the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act to set aside 200,000 acres of land for permanent Native Hawaiian homelands. His work to establish the first Hawaiian Civic Club created a powerful coalition of 50 organizations throughout the country that represent Native Hawaiian communities and businesses. It is said that he continued to advocate for the Native Hawaiian people until his dying day.⁠

On behalf of all of us at the Chamber, we celebrate the life and legacy of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole, one of only two monarchs to be honored with a state holiday in their name #kuhioday.⁠

Congratulations to member @ihshawaii on opening its homeless triage center!

Yesterday, our community came to celebrate and tour ‘Imi Ola Piha, Homeless Triage Center, which will open for guests next month. The center will be a stabilization center for chronically homeless adults who have decided to begin substance abuse detox and/or mental health treatment.

"This is truly a public-private partnership, in every sense of the word... [we]'ve always felt the love of the community, and this is very much a symbol of that." 💙

Eliza Talbot @elegallyblond has joined the team as our Vice President of Communications, Public Affairs & Strategy. We are lucky to have her!

Eliza’s experience includes working for state and local government as well as advocacy and community engagement for notable companies in the private sector including Ko Olina Resort, The Resort Group and Hitachi Rail. She also served as West O‘ahu City Council District’s Chief of Staff.

Addressing the mental health needs of our community and raising awareness around the existing resources to help our residents thrive is more critical now than ever. ⁠

Mental Health Awareness month runs May 1-31, and the Chamber will launch a month-long campaign to raise awareness and create meaningful dialogue about increasing mental health resources within our community. ⁠

In preparation, we invite our business community to take our 5-minute survey to better understand the specific mental health resources and needs. Results will be shared at an upcoming statewide webinar in May. ⁠

Last week, the Chamber of Commerce Hawaii worked in partnership with @hawaiikidscan and @hawaiip20 to host 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗪𝗕𝗟) 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘆 at the Hawaii State Capitol. The event was part of a larger Education Week initiative at the Capitol that was sponsored by legislators Senator Michelle Kidani @mnkidani and Representative Justin Woodson @repwoodson to highlight the importance of WBL and legislation to support more WBL opportunities for students. During the event, attendees heard a keynote from Pearl City High School about the importance of WBL to their school wide success, then heard from three panels. The panels were comprised of various stakeholders in WBL around the state including students, employers and work-based learning intermediaries. Thank you to all of our speakers during the event!
