Making a difference in our community starts with being an active participant in the electoral process and making educated decisions at the polls – and the stakes are high in the upcoming 2022 Hawaii Elections as we decide the next era of leadership in our state.
To help inform your vote, #YP4HI Civic Engagement is hosting a series of exclusive Talk Story events with candidates leading up to the Primary Election.
With the gubernatorial race at the forefront, we invite YPs to get to know leading candidates at our in-person, social events that aim to foster intimate and insightful conversations about the topics that matter to you.
Join us for our first event in the Talk Story series featuring gubernatorial candidate Vicky Cayetano.
Taking place in a casual and comfortable setting at the WorkPlay lanai, you will hear from the candidate about their personal experiences to the issues of importance to them in this election. Our Q&A will be followed by informal meet-and-greet time, which is an opportunity for you to speak candidly and have meaningful interaction with each candidate.
Registration fees include two (2) drink tickets and are not considered endorsement of nor contribution to any campaign.
Vicky Cayetano
Vicky Tiu Cayetano was born on March 16, 1956, in Manila, the Philippines, and immigrated to the U.S. at age 3. She grew up in San Francisco and attended Stanford University, majoring in business and economics. She left Stanford before her junior year to start a successful travel agency, which she later sold. In 1982, she moved to Hawaii where she married and started a family. After divorcing, she raised her two children as a single working mother. An entrepreneur at heart, she co-founded United Laundry Services (ULS) in 1987 and has led the company as president for 34 years. Under her leadership, ULS has grown to become the largest laundry company in the state, employing nearly 1,000 residents.
In 1997, Vicky married then sitting Governor Ben Cayetano. As First Lady, she founded the Washington Place Foundation and raised more than $1.2 million in private donations for the construction of a new residence for the governor to allow Washington Place to be preserved as a museum. She has had a good relationship with the legislature and championed taxes that protect unemployed workers while being fair to employers. She has advocated for animal rights and was instrumental in the passage of a bill banning the sale of shark fins in Hawaii. Vicky has been a longtime supporter of the community, and the Cayetanos and United Laundry Services have donated to approximately 40 nonprofit and charitable organizations. In addition, The Cayetano Foundation Scholarship provides 20 college scholarships to students in financial need every year.
Vicky says that Hawaii has been good to her and her family and she feels a strong obligation to give back and do all she can to improve the lives of the people of our state. Hawaii is facing extraordinary challenges as we recover and emerge from the pandemic. Vicky is committed to bringing people together to create solutions and build a better future for Hawaii.
