On behalf of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, we invite you to join us for our 4 th Roadmap Symposium on Building a Multilingual Workforce for Hawai‘i. The Symposium will bring together leaders from education, business, government and NGOs, providing participants with an opportunity to talk story about our state’s multilingual heritage, how it strengthens our workforce and how it presents challenges in our daily workplace interactions.
The first goal of the Symposium is to improve our understanding of workplace practices and policies that enable workers, customers, and clients alike not just to “get by”, but to thrive in our multilingual state. Through facilitated discussion, we will learn how employers and their workers ensure effective communication, fair access and quality service in interacting with and providing services to individuals whose language and cultural practices are less familiar, or even unfamiliar, to them. The second goal is to challenge participants to envision and commit to implementing these shared insights in their own workplace or industry sector. In acting together, Symposium participants will build on Hawai‘i’s longstanding tradition of maintaining strong community ties and honor our responsibility to respect and care for each other.
The Symposium features a Keynote Address by Linda L. Egnatz, Executive Director of the Global Seal of Biliteracy. Egnatz is a Board Member on the Joint National Committee for Languages--National Council for Languages and International Studies (JNCL-NCLIS) and the Illinois Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ICTFL) of which she was President (2013-14). In 2014, she received the signal honor of being named the ACTFL National Language Teacher of the Year. As a regionally and nationallyrecognized teacher of excellence, Linda’s work on the Seal of Biliteracy has contributed significantly to its current prominence on the national stage as an established recognition of language proficiency and as an emerging employer-recognized workforce credential.
Our morning session features a panel of employers and employees from state, private and NGO workplaces, who will share their rich experiences and insightful perspectives on language use in the workplace when working with bilingual or limited English proficient customers, clients and co-workers. All discussions will be professionally facilitated, and Symposium outcomes will be compiled and shared with the participants. As a leader in your organization, your participation will make a difference as we collaborate to build a brighter future for Hawaiʻi, its economy and its diverse communities. We look forward to welcoming you at the 4 th Symposium on Building a Multilingual Workforce for Hawai‘i.
