Raymond Vara
President & CEO
Hawaii Pacific Health
Mr. Vara serves as President & CEO of Hawaii Pacific Health. His responsibilities include executive oversight of Straub Benioff Medical Center, Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children, Pali Momi Medical Center and Wilcox Medical Center on Kauai.
Mr. Vara joined Hawaii Pacific Health in 2002 as Executive Vice President & CEO of Operations, and assumed the role of President & CEO in 2013. Prior to that, Mr. Vara served as CEO at Los Alamos Medical Center, a member of Banner Health System in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He was the center’s chief financial officer before being appointed CEO.
Previously, Mr. Vara served as a U.S. Army Officer with various assignments including Assistant Administrator and Chief Financial Officer for Bassett Army Community Hospital in Fairbanks, Alaska, and the Deputy Chief Financial Officer for Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington and with the 9th Infantry Regiment, Fort Lewis, Washington.
Mr. Vara holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Hawaii Pacific University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Alaska at Fairbanks. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and serves on several local and national boards to include: Lead Independent Director, Bank of Hawaii Corporation; Director, Island Insurance Co., Ltd.; Director, Tradewind Capital Group; Director, Tradewind Group, Inc.; Immediate Past-Chairman, American Heart Association (National); and Director, Hawaii Executive Collaborative. He and his wife, Tiffany, have five children. Mr. Vara has been a director of Hawaii Pacific Health since 2013.

Dr. Mark Mugiishi

HMSA
Dr. Mugiishi is the Chief Executive Officer of HMSA. For the majority of his career Dr. Mugiishi has practiced and taught surgery in private practice and in association with the University of Hawaiʻi John A. Burns School of Medicine. He has served HMSA in a variety of capacities since 1995, from part-time medical director to consultant. In 2015, he joined the leadership team as executive vice president, chief medical officer, and chief health officer.
In addition to his leadership at HMSA, Dr. Mugiishi co-founded the Endoscopy Institute of Hawaiʻi and the Eye Surgery Center of Hawaiʻi, and was a medical director at Hawaiʻi technology accelerators. He was a general surgeon in the state for nearly 30 years and was associate chair of the department of surgery and director of surgical education at the University of Hawaiʻi medical school.
Dr. Mugiishi currently serves as chair of the ʻIolani School Board of Governors. He coached varsity basketball at ʻIolani where he led the team to 11 league championships and seven state championships. He holds the distinction of being the winningest high school basketball coach in state history and, in 2010, coached the All-American Nike Jordan Brand Classic game in Madison Square Garden.
Dr. Mugiishi was a producer of the Broadway musical Allegiance starring George Takei and Lea Salonga, which ran at the Shubert’s Longacre Theater in New York City in 2015-16.
He earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
